A recap of our favourite indie-Canadian projects dropped in February.

SB Editor, Sami Huda reviews new music releases from Justine Tyrell, M1RZA, and Terez.

“Easy” Music Video by Terez
Release date: February 14, 2021

We should preface this by saying that if this is your first time listening to Terez, you are in for a very special treat. The video for her single “Easy” was released on Valentine’s Day and showcases Terez singing a stripped down acoustic ballad about the trials and tribulations of young love.

The sensational Calgary-born pop singer, equipped with her patented bubblegum-pink hair and soothing vocals is quickly emerging as one of Canada’s most exciting independent acts with songs like “Hot Mess” and “La. La. La.” gaining her noticeable success on streaming platforms and her songwriting skills have increased her artist profile on both sides of the 49th parallel.

“Karma” by Harman
Release date: February 19, 2021

“Karma” is latest single by Toronto’s rising neo-R&B disciple, Harman. The lyrics draw out his struggle to stay loyal in his relationships while balancing the hedonistic lifestyle of a rising star. Cosigned by the likes of Director X and Jessie Reyez, Harman continues to impress with each new project and his entire sonic aesthetic is best explained as the song you desperately want to play on the car ride home after a late night out in the city.

Justine Tyrell’s latest single “My Name” is the perfect song to set the mood on date nights. The soulful R&B singer invites the listener into her world as she sets the mood and vibe for a romantic night in. Just add this to your post-dinner-mood-setting playlist and thank us later.

“Jarin’s World” by Jarin Alab
Release date: February 19, 2021

Jarin Alab just dropped the most creative visual project of the month on his latest single “Jarin’s World”. The Brampton-based Tamil-Canadian rapper showcases his ability to go bar for bar at supersonic speeds over a very familiar beat (Britney Spears fans will enjoy this) as he raps over carefully edited famous movie scenes that shape the landscape of Jarin’s World. This project deserves major praise on its creative direction by debut director Jay Aramboo for managing to entrap the audience into Jarin’s psychedelic vision.

We also enjoyed the parts where Spongebob Squarepants tried to rob us.

“9 OUTTA 10” by M1RZA
Release date: February 11, 2021

Toronto’s own R&B crooner M1RZA is back with a self-directed Valentine’s day video special for his track “9 OUTTA 10”. A story about the exhaustive motions of endlessly dating and trying find that special someone to hold on to. This video explores his relationship with his own loneliness as he goes from partner to partner while holding on to the fear of getting hurt again.

But at the end, perhaps it’s not you, it’s him.

Written by M1RZA and Shai Buddah
Produced by Dullah
Video directed by M1RZA
